White Abbot, aliases Freeman, Golden Alchemist, Rasta Shogun (born William Joseph Freeman on May 20, 1978, in Washington, DC) is a popular *Sing-J/DJ* known for blending Rasta & Taoist philosophies into lyrical koans. Freeman is also regarded for high-energy shows and a diverse stage styles.
The White Abbot’s major musical influences started when he sojourned to Barbados to study at the University of the West Indies at the age of 20. Freeman left the social confines of the campus community and moved to a mountain jungle Rastafari Camp in order to increase his spiritual awareness through nature. This camp would later be known as the Unknown SoulJah’s.
It was during this time in nature that Freeman was reborn into the Light of Rastafari. With this Light came music, which began flowing from his heart. With the revelation of Rasta, Freeman took on a new name, The WHITE ABBOT.
Returning back to “Babylon” The White Abbot started a DJ Sound System called SoulJah Camp Sound. As a Selecta, DJ Freeman made many links with popular Reggae, Hip-Hop and Rock artist. To this day, DJ Freeman still spins records, and is renown for his reggae selections.
One reggae artist in particular, Shayar, saw the potential in Freeman and encouraged him to cultivate his lyrical talents. Around the same time The White Abbot began studying Ti Chi. Freeman’s study of the Tao cultivated his present metaphysical science that all true spiritual philosophies come from One Original Source. Hence, Freeman acquired the name Golden Alchemist, The Rasta Shogun from his Ti Chi Quan Master.
To put his musical inspiration into play The White Abbot created a backing band named “Rebel Alliance.” The bands sound reflects Freeman’s love of diversity in culture. Rebel Alliance incorporates a reggae foundation with touches of Hip-Hop, and Jazz blended with Eastern Instruments.
